Luxury Car Battle Intensifies in India in 2026

The premium car market in India is entering an exciting phase in 2026, with German luxury brands BMW and Audi preparing important new models and expanding their electric and locally assembled portfolios. Both manufacturers are focusing on SUVs, advanced technology and stronger localisation as competition in India's luxury automobile market continues to grow.

One of BMW's biggest upcoming launches is the BMW X1 Long Wheelbase (LWB). The extended SUV is scheduled to launch in India on August 21, 2026, and will become BMW's most affordable combustion-powered long-wheelbase model in the country. The X1 LWB is designed to offer additional rear-seat space while retaining the premium styling and driving characteristics associated with the X1.

BMW's broader performance in India has also been strong. BMW Group India reported 9,075 vehicle deliveries during the first half of 2026, representing 17% year-on-year growth. Electric vehicles were particularly important, with 2,359 EVs sold during the period, a 78% increase compared with the same period last year. BMW said EVs accounted for 26% of its sales, highlighting the increasing importance of electric mobility in the luxury segment.

The company is continuing to expand its electric portfolio. BMW's iX and i5 families are among the key models supporting its EV strategy, while the company has planned numerous product launches and updates for India during 2026. The long-wheelbase i5 is particularly significant because it is expected to be assembled in Chennai, strengthening BMW's local manufacturing strategy.

Audi, meanwhile, is preparing for the arrival of the next-generation Audi Q3, one of its most important new SUVs for the Indian market. Audi has teased the new Q3 ahead of its India launch, with the model expected to feature a 204hp 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and quattro all-wheel drive. The new SUV also gets a technology-focused cabin with a large central touchscreen and digital instrumentation.

The Q3 is especially important for Audi because the company has identified it as the first model in a new product rollout for India. Audi India has confirmed plans for three major locally assembled models—the Q3, A5 and Q9—through its production facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The strategy reflects Audi's belief that greater local production will be important for long-term growth in India.

Beyond the Q3, Audi is also preparing additional products and technologies as it competes with BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The company is looking to strengthen its SUV range while gradually expanding its electric vehicle presence. This comes at a time when Indian luxury-car buyers are increasingly interested in technology, comfort, safety and alternative powertrains.

BMW and Audi are therefore approaching the Indian market from slightly different directions. BMW is benefiting from strong demand for SUVs, long-wheelbase models and electric vehicles, while Audi is preparing a renewed product offensive led by the Q3 and supported by increased local assembly.

The competition is likely to become even stronger as more luxury SUVs and EVs arrive before the end of 2026. Customers will have more choices across petrol, hybrid and electric powertrains, while manufacturers will compete on technology, performance, design and pricing.

Overall, the latest BMW and Audi developments demonstrate how quickly India's premium automobile market is changing. With the BMW X1 LWB arriving shortly and Audi's new Q3 preparing for launch, luxury-car buyers have several exciting new options to look forward to in 2026.
